Laura Dykes

“I am a Nashville Defender because I believe that our freedom and liberty are the most important things we have as individuals and I am ready, willing and able to fight for yours.”

Meet the Defenders

Laura Dykes graduated from Vanderbilt Law School in 1986. She clerked for two years, first with Judge Scott and then Judge Daughtrey, at the Tennessee Court of Criminal Appeals. She joined the Public Defender’s Office in 1988 as the 13th — and youngest — lawyer in the office. She has been a Public Defender for 26 years, has seen the office grow to 50 + lawyers, and is now one of the oldest lawyers in the office.

She teaches criminal Law at the Nashville School of Law and has mentored many law students. An abiding dislike of bullies and an overwhelming desire to help clients who are being bullied by the criminal justice system has been her motivation all these years.
