"The true measure of our character is how we treat the poor, the disfavored, the accused, the incarcerated, and the condemned." – Bryan Stevenson
Meet the DefendersInspired by Bryan Stevenson’s Just Mercy, Jessica Alexandrea Fuqua embarked on her legal journey with an unwavering commitment to justice, compassion, and reform. A Nashville native, Jessica graduated from Martin Luther King Jr. Academic Magnet High School. She then went on to graduate cum laude from Tennessee State University with both a Bachelor of Science in Biology and a Master of Business Administration before earning her Juris Doctor from Southern University Law Center in December 2024.
Jessica’s passion for criminal law and public defense is deeply rooted in her belief that every person deserves a fair and dignified defense. She has served in a variety of impactful legal roles, including Policy Director for a Texas State Representative during the Texas Legislative Internship Program, a Law Clerk for Innocence & Justice Louisiana (formerly the Innocence Project New Orleans), a Legal Extern for Walmart, Inc., and a Legal Extern for the U.S. Space Force JAG Corps.
Each of these experiences honed Jessica’s skills in legal research, advocacy, and systemic analysis while reinforcing her dedication to uplifting marginalized communities through the law.
During law school, Jessica also served in various leadership positions. She was a member of many extracurricular organizations, including serving as President of the Honors Board of Advocates Mock Trial Team, Symposium Editor for the Journal of Race, Gender and Poverty, and Outreach Coordinator for the Children and Family Law Society. Jessica is also a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, the NAACP, Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity, the Order of the Barristers, and the National Association of Colored Women’s Clubs.
With a strong academic foundation, a record of public service, and an empathetic approach to advocacy, Jessica now channels her intellect, discipline, and heart into the work of public defense—standing beside the accused, fighting inequity, and striving to ensure that justice is not a privilege, but a promise.
